Syringa pubescens subsp. patula Miss Kim forms a compact, bushy deciduous shrub with dark green leaves that turn burgundy to purple in fall. Purple buds open into fragrant pale lavender flowers and fade toward near white.
Its dense spring panicles attract butterflies and hummingbirds, while its restrained size suits smaller borders, foundation plantings, and low hedges. Plant it in full sun in rich, moist but well-drained soil, and allow good air circulation.
Prune immediately after flowering and remove faded flower clusters before seed set to protect the next seasons bloom. This cultivar has strong powdery mildew resistance, though other lilac pests and diseases can still occur.
