Red flowers with yellow centers and pale yellow reverses cover Dasiphora fruticosa Marian Red Robin from summer into early fall, while strong sun can shift some petals toward orange. The compact, spreading shrub fits low hedges, mixed borders, gravel gardens, and patio containers.
At maturity, expect a bushy plant about 1 1/2 to 3 feet tall and wide. Each small compound leaf carries five to seven narrow leaflets, building a fine green backdrop for the single flowers. Full sun supports abundant bloom, while partial shade helps the red color last longer.
Plant in moist but well-drained chalk, loam, or sandy soil. Water regularly during the first year and during extended dry spells after establishment. Add a spring mulch of well-rotted compost or manure, then trim lightly after flowering. The ornamental fruit is not for eating; RHS also advises gloves when handling the plant and gives the same fruit warning for pets.
